Important to know – what's new?
With the introduction of Windows Server 2012, four editions are available: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, Standard, Essentials, and Foundation. There is no direct successor to Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, HPC Edition, and Web Server. The Datacenter and Standard editions take over these features.

Additionally, the licensing model for Windows Server 2012 Standard & Datacenter is changing from server-based licenses to a processor-based licensing model, which includes up to two processors per server. Each user or device must be licensed using Client Access Licenses (CALs).
